Improving Local Residents Health & Wellbeing
Did you know that 20% of GP appointments are spent dealing with non-medical issues? Wasted time and resources is a big problem within the NHS right now because people don’t know which health services are appropriate for their condition or problem. There are various free community schemes in Wokingham Borough which aim to help local people to find the resources, support and information that they need in order to keep themselves, and the people they care about, safe and healthy!
First, we set up the Community Navigation Scheme in 2016. This is a social prescribing, information giving and signposting project. We receive referrals and put clients in touch with one of our Community Navigation Officers, who explores a range of options for the individual to engage with. They support and encourage people to attend groups, activities and services that can help them meet their needs.
New for 2019, we are developing a Cancer Support Network in Wokingham Borough called ‘Cancer Champions’. The aim of the project is to support people with cancer and their carers or family, at any point along their journey. The project will bring together information and resources, as well as offer emotional support through a volunteer network of Cancer Champions. Monthly meet-ups are also available, bringing together people in the community affected by cancer and giving them the opportunity to meet each other and share experiences. Online support is also available through a closed Facebook group offering support at any time in a safe space.
Lastly, we are part of the Wokingham Health and Wellbeing Board. This is being run and supported by local councils, Clinical Commissioning Groups and various other local health organisations and charities. Throughout 2018 we have been sharing information through social media in order to help people find ways to maintain their health and wellbeing. We encourage users to share their own services, experiences or advice using our hashtag – #WokinghamHWBB. This year, we are hoping to get more of the public involved by setting up and attending local health forums and events to further spread our message of self-care.
All three of these schemes are run by involve Community Services with the aim of trying to ease the pressure on the NHS, local GP surgeries and other health care professionals. If you think you might need support from one of our schemes, would be interested in helping out and getting involved, or want to find out more, then be sure to get in touch!
